Drivers of modern cars need access to information about rarely used or hidden functions. An innovative approach to make these information available while driving is a natural-language, avatar-based assistance system for in-vehicle use.
First, a reference architecture for avatar systems is developed, which is applied to the automotives domain. The implementation of the software consists of different modules, which provide functions for speech recognition, speech synthesis, reaction determination, 3D realtime rendering and for reactions to messages of the car’s bus systems.
For the development of dialogs, an authoring tool is developed, which enables graphic modelling. This application is a component of a process model in seven phases, in order to transfer structured information into dialogs. The avatar system and multimedia contents are finally evaluated with 67 subjects in an experimental vehicle.
