A water channel was set up in the Laboratory for Hydromechanics of the Technische Universität München to experimentally investigate the flow over periodic hills. PIV and LDA average values and fluctuations were thoroughly checked and compared with DNS data at Re=5600 and highly resolved LES data at Re=10600. The periodicity of the flow in the streamwise direction and the homogeneity in the spanwise direction could be shown for Re≥10600. The spanwise size of the structures was estimated through two-point correlations. The flow was analysed with respect to the Reynolds number development, the reattachment behaviour, a tiny recirculation zone on the hill crest and the splatting effect on the windward side of the hill. In addition, data for Re=19000 and Re=37000, which hitherto cannot be found in the literature, are presented and discussed.
