How to assess the acceptability of design support

Transferring design support to industry still represents a great challenge. Some of the barriers include high effort to apply methods and complex presentation and documentation of design support. Several Authors agree that usability and accessibility are key factors for transfer of methods and other kinds of design support. However, while the importance of usability, acceptance, applicability, etc. of design support is evident, present research in engineering design often fails to define what these concepts exactly implicate in the context of design support and to provide concrete recommendations. This paper aims to provide a basis for evaluating the acceptability of design support tangibly and together with potential users. For this purpose, models of user acceptance from the areas of usability, user experience, and technology management are examined and transferred to design support. The assessment developed proposes a more detailed, structured and transparent evaluation of the applicability of support.     «
