A fuel cell APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) is an interesting solution in order to cover the increasing electrical power demand in vehicles in an efficient way. In this study, possible applications and ways of integration of an APU into the vehicle are identified and discussed. To determine the influence of an APU on the vehicle’s fuel consumption, different methods are considered. The focus is on simulations using several bordnet models with increasing complexity. The capability of the APU to reduce the fuel consumption is analysed and illustrated, looking at selected scenarios and different vehicles from today’s vehicles to hybrid electric vehicles.
