The thesis examines the coherences between competitive sport activity of children and their professional career, exemplified by the very informative subject of figurative skating. It provides answers to topical questions in sports science and sports politics and counters common perceptions. 56 former competitive athletes have been questioned and interviewed – the results show that intensive sports activities have a very positive effect on professional development. Figure skating as a performing art teaches distinct impression management tactics and self marketing strategies which are highly useful learning effects. Acting under orders, a successful time management and provision for sustainable professional education require sensitive support from the children’s families and the relevant institutions. The recommendations given in the thesis apply in principle to comparable sports as well.
