In his late work (1954-1970), Ernst May is a exponent of the overall development of German urban planning of the fifties and sixties.
For a long time, May adheres to the overall concept of the “structured and decentralised city” and of the “neighbourhoods”. When the demand for higher densities and a more “urbane” character of housing arises at the beginning of the sixties, May also follows this tendency, he however, always tries to combine housing with a strong reference to landscape.
In spite of a exceptionally wide oeuvre and undeniable successes, May in his late work fails to produce architectonical masterpieces or substantial original creations and thus to crown his life´s work.
