Diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) are interesting materials for spintronics. Zn
0.95Co
0.05O
thin films were grown on ZnO, Al
2O
3 and ScAlMgO
4 substrates and
their structural and magnetic properties were determined. Magnetization measurements with SQUID magnetometry
showed a magnetic coupling, which can also be explained in terms of superparamagnetic nanoparticles. Elementspecific
x-rax magnetic circular dichroism measurements proved, that the magnetic moment is caused by metallic cobalt nanoparticles.
X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy confirm this result. Evidence of a second ferromagnetic phase,
especially of a DMS, were not found.
