According to epidemiological studies in Germany, 34% of persons with tinnitus feel impaired due to oversensitivity to noise. To investigate the extent of a correlation with psychological factors, we studied a sample of 163 persons with chronic tinnitus.
The results show that in 59% of the cases, hyperacusis is also present (Structured Tinnitus-Interview; STI). According to the hyperacusis parameters of the STI, The Noise Sensitivity Questionnaire (GÜF) and audiometrical measurements of the threshold of discomfort (UBS), anxiety disorders and anxiety symptoms occur more often in persons with hyperacusis. In addition, the prevalence of affect disorders and symptoms of depression are also found more frequently among those with hyperacusis, using the criteria of the GÜF and the UBS. Somatoform disorders are equally distributed among persons with tinnitus with and without hyperacusis.
