In order to meet this need of huge amount of food especially from agricultural production, plant protection measures for the optimization of yield rates have become imperative. A single measure is not always enough to protect the plants from insects, weeds, mushrooms and other pests. One of these measures is the application of chemical pesticides. If these are applied properly by expert hands, observed residues in or on agricultural products may not pose a problem. However, resent scientific investigations on respective agricultural products, such as grapes, strawberries, have shown that these products are burdened with critical amounts of pesticidal residues. Especially for plant products from the EU adjacent states, residue levels were found that were partially above the legally prescribed limits. Therefore, questions arise as to the proceedings of application, output and monitoring of pesticides in these for the international market producing countries. It was the aim of this work to find answers and to get more insight into the pesticide application in the EU bordering countries. The local infrastructure and facts on pesticides was scrutinized in countries such as Rumania and Bulgaria, which recently became EU members, as well as in Turkey, Croatia, Serbia-Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, and Bosnia-Hercegowina. The deficits existing in these countries in areas of agricultural production were assessed, taking consumer and plant protection into account.
