In this study analytical methods are presented which provide the basis for systematic investigations on the prevalence of amino acids, proteins and nitroderivatives in atmospheric aerosol particles and road dust. Amino acid analysis and protein hydrolysis methods were characterized and applied for protein and amino acid composition determination in environmental samples. Fast protein determination assays were evaluated for its applicability by comparison with amino acid analysis results. Furthermore methods of a selective sample purification, e.g. immunoaffinity chromatography, for the enrichment of 3-nitrotryrosine were developed and tested.
