A series of new poly(ether keton)es was synthesized via a novel synthetic route, with defined variations of structure in the main chain. All polymers are amorphous, have high molecular weight, high glass transition temperatures and form stable films. The measurement and interpretation of, permeability coeffizients for O
2, N
2, CO
2 and CH
4 and the ideal selectivities allow the identification of a chain segment, that controls the gas transport. In this segment the indane groups are fixed and serve as hinges for the important chain movements.
