This thesis analyzes the impact of mega-sport events on host residents’ quality of life. The data was longitudinally collected over three waves within the context of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. The empirical findings indicate that hosting per se does not lead to changes in quality of life. However, contextual factors, event atmosphere and team identification, had a significant influence on residents’ quality of life, the second mediated by national identity. Managerial implications for event organizers and sport federations, amongst others are formulated.
