The present thesis deals with fundamentals of the application of IR-spectroscopy for process control in paper manufacturing. Included is the analysis of the process solutions during and after the kraft pulping. Process quality and yield of pulp are affected by parameters like temperature, cooking time and the concentrations of the chemicals used. In this thesis an in-line system is presented, which uses IR-spectroscopic technology for simultaneous observation of the various constituents of the multi-component system (black liquor) during the kraft pulping. Another object of this thesis was the development of an analytical model which describes the delignification. As a result of optimized process-control, pulp qualities (Kappa number, tension length, bursting strength, tearing resistance) are improved, yield is increased and scattering of product quality, energy and chemical consumption can be reduced.
