A systematic review on prevalence rates and psychological factors for depressive syndromes in elite sports was conducted. Data showed severe but also varying prevalence rates. Guidance for future research was provided. A following study investigated the relation between depression and athlete burnout. In detail, their conceptual relation in regards to stress and their temporal relation was analysed in a cross-sectional and longitudinal design. Therefore, a connection via stress and a reciprocal, temporal link between both constructs was supported.
