The burden on relatives of schizophrenic patients in relationship to the participation respectively non-participation of the relatives in professional intendet bifocal psychoeducational groups and non-specific relatives' groups

The present study investigated possible influential parameters on the burden on the relatives of schizophrenic patients (n=104). In this case it deals with two samples of the Munich PIP-Study (Bäuml et al., 1996) with (n=31) and without (n=23) bifocal short-term psychoeducation; a third sample (n=50) participated in groups for relatives, that were not related with the Munich PIP-Study. Sociodemographic factors and the compliance of the patients ("Ceiling-Effect") could not explain the different degrees of burden on the relatives. Psychopathological behavioral disorders of the patients (Plus- and Minus-Symptoms)and a recent hospital release however had a significant correlation in the extent of the burden. The independentely organized relatives' groups allow the recognition of a secondary-supportive effect. The bifocal short-term psychoeducational group appears on the other hand to have a secondary-preventative effect on the burden.
