Abstract:
A quantum network at the global scale will consist of stationary nodes linked via photonic channels. Single atoms in optical cavities are a prime candidate for building these nodes, as this approach combines a well-controllable matter qubit with an optical interface. Here we advance this platform to multiple individually-useable atoms within the same cavity. As the main result, we implement a quantum repeater for unconditionally-secure quantum key distribution. Our achievements realize a longstanding goal in the quantum information community.
