This thesis covers two main topics. Firstly, a centrifuge decelerator for polar molecules is demonstrated. It employs the centrifugal force in a rotating frame to decelerate molecules to a standstill. Its efficiency and output intensity outperforms all existing sources for cold molecules. Secondly, a comprehensive thermometry for polyatomic molecules is presented. It is based on resonant radio-frequency depletion spectroscopy, and enables characterization of cryogenic buffer-gas-cooling of polyatomic molecules.
