Spin-Orbit Interaction in the Douglas-Kroll-Hess Approach and a Novel Two-Component Treatment of Spin-Independent Interaction Terms

Relativistic Density Functional method within the Douglas-Kroll-Hess approach has been extended by the relativistic treatment of the Coulomb interaction of electrons. The new extension allows variational treatment of this interaction in the framework of the two-component relativistic Kohn-Sham theory by expanding the electron density in an auxiliary basis. The method has been applied to simulate spectroscopic parameters of diatomic molecules containing heavy elements. A novel ansatz for the choice of the symmetrized two-component spinor bases which are adapted to the point group and to the corresponding double group symmetries allows efficient treatment of spin-free operators. An extension to symmetry-adaption of the four-component spinors has been developed and applied to relativistic transformation of the Coulomb potential of the electron density.
