Abstract:
Flickering light in the alpha (8-12Hz) range produces steady-state visually evoked potentials (SSVEPs), the mechanisms of which are framed dichotomously: entrainment of underlying intrinsic oscillators or superposition on intrinsic activity. Two alpha flicker paradigms with EEG measurement, centred around the intrinsic peak alpha frequency, showed evoked response variability across intrinsic alpha sources. In a third BOLD-fMRI study, we investigated the mechanisms underlying this variability at the source level. Results provide first insight into the possibility of multiple mechanisms in evoked response generation.
