Abstract:

Chronic hypoxia induces pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary vascular remodeling and right ventricular hypertrophy. Hypoxia-inducible factors (HIF) are master regulators of transcription in hypoxic cells. Although smooth muscle cells critically contribute to the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension, the specific role of smooth muscle HIF is not well understood. This study shows that the presence of HIF1α and HIF2α in smooth muscle cells promotes the development of hypoxia-induced pulmonary vascular remodeling and pulmonary hypertension.
