This thesis addresses the problem of medical instrument detection, tracking and pose estimation for retinal Microsurgery. It introduces novel discriminative methods to localize the instrument joints and estimate the instrument orientation in order to automate the positioning of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scans during surgery. The performance in terms of accuracy, robustness and speed was evaluated on in-vivo retinal microsurgery datasets as well as on laparoscopic surgery.
