This study looks at the rate of recidivism among patients who underwent surgery on a squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity. All operations were performed at the Munich Rechts der Isar Clinical Center. The study covers a period of almost four years and surveys the cases from a number of angles. From July 2007 to May 2011 surgery was performed on 304 patients almost diagnosed with a squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity (13115 individual information). Result of study: The rate of recidivism was found to be 15,7% - a rate significantly lower than averages given in comparable studies. This study also highlights a clear and almost consistent link between rate of recidivism and tumor formula. 44,1% of operations necessitated by recidivism led to a second relapse - a highly significant link. This study shows off another significant result: SOHNDs, which were performed on 69,4 % of cases, did not protect against recidivism any more than chemical or radiological therapy. Interestingly, recidivism tumors occurred at a highly significant rate with patients not resident in an area permitting follow-up care in a clinical environment.
