The present study focuses on the high-grade serous epithelial ovarian cancer and addresses the role of chemokines CXCL9 and CX3CL1 in the immune response against tumor progression. Murine studies with intratumoral overexpression of CXCL9 increased the number of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes to such an extent that, in combination with anti-PD-L1 immune checkpoint therapy, there was an additive effect on survival. A retrospective study with human collectives, as well as metastatic in vivo trials revealed that high intratumoral CX3CL1 expression leads to significantly worsened survival, whereas in contrast, tumor progression was significantly reduced in a subcutaneous primary tumor in vivo model.
