Patients with antiplatelet and antithrombotic therapy represent a substantial part of ENT patients. Besides a survey investigating the consumption of analgetics with hemostatic effect in self-medication, an analysis of medical data from patients with antiplatelet or antithrombotic medication who underwent head and neck surgery or presented with epistaxis was performed. In this group of patients an elevated bleeding rate as well as a prolonged duration of intensive care treatment and overall hospitalization was found. Based on this data a recommendation for the perioperative routine dealing with this group of patients was elaborated.
