This retrospective, longitudinal study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the main treatment options in terms of changes in functional health in adolescents and adults with congenital heart disease (CHD). Generally, active treatment was associated with better health-related quality of life (HRQoL) over time. Patients reported better physical HRQoL after surgery and catheter intervention, although this effect was not detectable in the objectively measured exercise capacity. Hence, parallel assessment of HRQoL and exercise capacity is essential in the evaluation of adolescents and adults with CHD.
