Abstract:
Genetically-encoded tools for molecular imaging and actuation are indispensable in biomedical research. Many of these tools, such as GFP, are based on visible light which has limited tissue penetration. To overcome this limitation, we herein exploit iron-storing prokaryotic nano-compartments in the context of cell manipulation and multi-modal molecular imaging across scales in mammalian systems. More generally, we introduce prokaryotic nano-compartments as programmable bio-orthogonal nano-organelles.
