For the first time, this study provides data on the dental status of children and adolescents with congenital heart disease (CHD) in Germany, which has a significant influence on the general health status of the affected patients regarding the potential risk of infective endocarditis. These patients with CHD exhibit a higher DMF-index than healthy children. It becomes clear that there is a need for action in educating parents of children with CHD about the importance of oral hygiene and for individual patient education on this subject as well as dental care for CHD patients must be improved.
