Case-reports have described coprinus-like syndrome after ingestion of the mushroom Lepiota asperum in combination with ethanol. We were able to demonstrate inhibition of the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase, necessary for ethanol breakdown by means of an in vitro enzyme assay. The inhibiting substance is water-soluble and stable to heat. The inhibition is concentration-dependent and is reversible by the addition of mercaptoethanol.
Using the same assay, we were also able to detect an inhibition of the aldehyde dehydrogenase for the fungi Boletus luridus, Lycoperdon umbrinum, Clitocybe clavipes and Boletus edulis, which was partly unknown until know.
