Analgesia in obstetrics. Influence of remifentanil patient-controlled analgesia vs. epidural analgesia on the second stage of labour, delivery type and neonatal outcome: A retrospective comparative study

Epidural analgesia (EA) remains the gold standard for analgesia during labour.
Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) with remifentanil is an alternative method whose practice increased in recent years.
However, insufficient investigated until now are potential effects of remifentanil on maternal and foetal outcome.
Purpose of this retrospective study is to analyse the influence of PCA using remifentanil for labour-pain on the process of labour and the foetal outcome, wherefore a comparison is made to EA as well as to non-opioid analgesia.
The results of our analyses approve remifentanil PCA to be a valuable and, most importantly, secure alternative to EA during labour.
