Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) shows promise for lightweight applications, due to its high specific strength and stiffness, and short cycle times. However, the flow during the compression process is very challenging due to the high variability of the material. A new characterization method and flow test bench were developed to understand the flow better and improve its prediction in process simulation. Furthermore, guidelines for the production process of SMC were derived for higher part quality. This research improves SMC process simulation and broadens the use of the material, including recycled variants.
