The Split-Crankshaft Engine is a logical further development of cylinder deactivation engines. During driving operation, the secondary engine completely stands still for low load demands and dynamically connects on request to the permanently fired primary engine via the Split-Clutch Unit, which mounts between both partial engines. The feasibility study analyses the mode of operation, the required operation strategy, the functional requirements of the auxiliaries and the achievable efficiency potential within an extensive co-simulation. The coupled operation of both partial engines is investigated experimentally through application and design parameter variations.
