In order to make plastic-based multilayer packaging recyclable, a polyurethane-based Diels-Alder adhesive was formulated and synthesized. On the one hand, it ensures good adhesion between the different layers, but it can also be solvated without leaving residues in a solvent-based recycling process and the composite can thus be delaminated. The conditions under which an application in food packaging is legally permissible were determined and it was shown that the principle can be implemented on a small technical scale.
