Abstract:
The knowledge about plant availability of secondary phosphorus (P) sources in growing media-based crop production is scarce. Thus, this was investigated in pot trials and various growing media analyses were tested regarding their ability to reflect available secondary source-P. The plant P availability varied between the secondary sources, but was the highest for struvites. Maintaining growing media pH values <5 and applying secondary P sources in powder form increased plant P availability in general. A combination of growing media analyses (CAT- and CAL-method) was the most promising to reflect plant-available P. However, detection of available P by the combined approach was limited for secondary source-P associated with Fe or Al, particularly under acidic conditions in the growing medium.
