Small-diameter TBMs are increasingly deployed for utility tunnelling projects, but they face diverse geological and technical challenges. With the aid of a recently compiled database, new approaches for performance analysis and prediction for small-diameter TBMs are presented. Furthermore, a comprehensive geotechnical testing on microwave pre-conditioned rock samples, resulting in strength reduction ratios of over 50%, was performed, which could significantly boost the advance rates and profitability of future mechanized hard rock tunnel boring and mining equipment.
