The knowledge about the distribution of Tangelhumus in the Bavarian Alps is very scarce. Thus, the localization, the detection and the preparation of recommendations for their protection were the objectives of this work. Tangelhumus occurs on 10% of the forest area. Crucial for the formation of the forest floors is the mineral soil depth underneath, which is very poorly developed on limestone and dolomite. Heather and Lycopodiums can reliably indicate these occurrences on limestone or dolomite. It is essential to leave dead wood and to maintain a resilient permanent forest cover.
