The residential sector can contribute substantially to the integration of renewable energy by flexibilization of consumption. Variable electricity rates can incentivize load-shifting measures according to grid requirements. A simulation method is presented for the modeling and optimization of the design and parametrization of such variable rates based on measured consumption data. It shows that suitable legal implementation of this approach can considerably reduce curtailment of renewables and, thus, increases the usable share of green energy.
