This thesis focused on the study of Hume-Rothery inspired cluster synthesis controlled by addition of additives. Alkynes were used as the appropriate additive to vary cluster size and metal distribution of intermetallic TM/E compounds (TM = Ni, Pd, Pt; E = Al, Ga). Combining in-situ analytical methods with theoretical calculations, valid structural suggestions could be proposed without isolation. Lastly, selected clusters were tested for their suitability for semi-hydrogenation reactions.
