Nanomaterials have the potential to optimize plastic food packaging. The use of nanoscale additives is, however, contrasted by their largely unknown toxicity. Within this study an analytical method for the specific detection of nanoscale substances in food simulants and for measuring the exposure of the consumer to such materials was developed. It was found that nanomaterials that are incorporated into a polymer matrix are largely immobilized and therefore do not migrate out of the packaging into food.
