Abstract:
Autologous blood doping by transfusing stored erythrocyte concentrates provides competitive athletes an inordinate advantage via increased oxygen capacity and is thus prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency to assure fairness. Detecting illicit autologous blood doping is extremely challenging. As the storage of erythrocyte concentrates impacts its microRNA profiles, we performed a human study and aimed at establishing a doping-dependent microRNA biomarker signature based on both whole blood and urinary extracellular vesicles.
