During digestion, mechanical forces act on the intestinal wall. In this study it was important to investigate the effect of distension and pressure on the secretion of the human colon using the voltage-clamp method. Chloride and bicarbonate were found to mediate the distension induced secretion. In addition, it was shown that distension, in particular, induces secretion, which is mediated prominently by prostaglandins and neurons of the submucous plexus. Additionally, the guinea pig was tested as a suitable representation of a human model.
