The exploration and development of novel biocatalysts is of major interest in the industrial biotechnology. In this work, novel enzymes were explored using two different approaches. First, a polyextremophilic alcohol dehydrogenase derived from the deep Red Sea brine pools was characterized and evaluated for industrial purposes. In the second approach an artificial metalloenzyme with an incorporated dirhodium(II) complex was designed based on the biotin-streptavidin technology and employed for the asymmetric cyclopropanation.
