Abstract:

The accelerating effect of alginate, a natural polysaccharide, on calcium aluminate cement was investigated. For this purpose, material properties in paste and mortar were examined and the underlying mechanism of action elucidated. The dormant phase of the cement hydration was found to be shortened in the presence of alginate and thus the formation of the C-A-H phases begins earlier. This effect is based upon the ion-binding capacity of the alginate which creates a heterogeneous nucleation and crystallization surface.
