Immobilization and inflammation are the main risk factors to induce muscle wasting accompanied by insulin resistance in critically ill patients. However, the influence of these factors on the insulin signal transduction pathway in skeletal muscle remains controversial. This study investigates the effects of immobilization and inflammation on insulin signaling in skeletal muscle by examining insulin-dependent Akt activation and phosphorylation of its downstream enzymes glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3) and glycogen synthase (GS).
