Dual-specificity phosphatase (Dusp) 8 is highly expressed in the hippocampus and inactivates mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). Aberrant MAPK signaling causes alterations in stress signaling with major impact on health and disease. We here show substrate specificity of Dusp8 towards Erk. Our results describe Dusp8 as inducible early gene that modulates cognition, anxiety and glucose sensing circuits in the brain as well as glucose-reward related foraging behaviors. In summary, Dusp8 plays a modulatory role in the metabolic-cognitive network of the brain.
