Macrophages and monocytes play a critical role during allergic inflammatory processes in the respiratory tract. In this study, the inflammatory and regulatory characteristics of these cells are analyzed. The benefits of a successful allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) for allergic patients are demonstrated. The expression of PD-L1 on monocytes as well as the level of Neopterin in sputum can be used as biomarkers for treatment success by AIT. Further therapeutic targets include the chemokine IP-10, the PD ligands and the enzyme IDO.
