Detection of circulating tumour cells in venous whole blood of patients with metastasised urothelial cancer during chemotherapy with Paclitaxel and RAD001

The aim of this study was to analyse circulating tumour cells (CTCs) as parameters of progression and prognosis in patients with metastasised urothelial cancer. Using immunomagnetic separation, circulating tumour cells were detected in samples of venous whole blood taken from patients undergoing combination treatment with Paclitaxel and RAD001. These cells were then examined in terms of their connection with the pattern of metastatic spread, routine laboratory parameters, quality of life, progression-free survival, and overall survival. CTCs were not found to be suitable parameters of progression and prognosis.
