In this study, in a high number of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma a significantly lower expression of key components of the NOTCH signaling pathway was observed compared to normal mucosa. Patients with a high mRNA expression of NOTCH signaling pathway showed a significantly longer overall and disease-free survival. In p16 positive carcinomas, a significantly higher expression of NOTCH1 mRNA was shown. Patients with p16 positive carcinomas and a high NOTCH1 expression showed a favorable prognosis.
