Hepatitis B virus (HBV) possesses strict species specificity. This thesis shows that the Na+-taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP) is the limiting factor for HBV infection in macaque and porcine hepatocytes. Moreover, using a newly established quantitative expression system, it was possible to compare NTCP variants and to identify NTCPs of different species as functional HBV receptors. Taken together this thesis enables new insight into the inter-species transmission of HBV and paves the way for the establishment of new HBV animal models.
