Despite improvements in diagnosis and treatment, the survival of patients suffering from oral squamous cell carcinoma did not improve significantly. The recurrence of the tumour is an influential factor. Aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of intraoperative frozen section analysis on the recurrence rate and the survival of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma. It could be shown that intraoperative frozen section analysis is an important tool for tumour control. However, in some cases the resection margin is not free of tumour. Thus, an improvement in intraoperative detection of tumour tissue is necessary.
