Leaf and fruit surfaces of plants grown under natural conditions are always colonized with a microbial flora. These surfaces represent attractive microhabitats for microorganisms. In the course of a common co-evolution, distinct biochemical and molecular interactions have arisen, which are the object of the conducted studies. The main focus of this work was to determine the interaction between the non-pathogenic microorganisms and the host plants. To this end, epiphyllic microorganisms were first isolated from their habitats and identified. On the basis of biochemical properties and the 16S rDNA-analysis eleven epiphyllic bacteria were characterized, nearly all of which belong to the genus Pseudomonas. These isolated bacteria were used in subsequent experiments of the interactions of epiphyllic bacteria with leaf surfaces.
